Figure 5 Enjoyment careers: family-orientated married women graduates

Married men and women in the graduate sample show a drop in their enjoyment of friends of the opposite sex, and both drop their enjoyment of day-dreaming and fantasies. They concentrate more on the here and now issues of home- and family-building. For women in this group the enjoyment of being with children peaks in the early establishment period. For men the enjoyment of children rises too but somewhat less so. This pattern may be different for other sub-groups; enjoyment of children may come later. These data also show that women carry the main function of linking the family with other kin; this is similar to the pattern reported by researchers of working-class families. In the graduate sample men enjoy visiting relatives less than women and their involvements between home and work are more split.
